The 21.5 inch and 27 inch Apple iMacs were just updated with improved quad core processors and the Thunderbolt I/O technology from Intel.

Apple just announced that their iMacs are getting an upgrade, with Core i5 and i7 processors and the Thunderbolt I/O. The 21.5 inch base model now has an i5 processor and 4GB of RAM, instead of the i3 model that was previously installed. As for the version with a 27 inch screen, the Core i3 processor is no longer an option for it. This model now comes only with quad core CPUs on it.

iMacs are also getting the Thunderbolt I/O technology from Intel, which allows for both PCI Express and DisplayPort devices to run at the same time via a 10 Gbps bidirectional connection. The 21.5 inch model comes with one of these ports, while the 27 inch iMac has two of them.

One other feature is the support for FaceTime HD, which allows the user to do HD video calls as long as both computers have this capability.

The base model is the 21.5 inch iMac with a i5 quad core processor at 2.5GHz, 500GB hard drive, Radeon HD6750M graphics chip and it costs $1,199. The cheapest 27 inch model comes with an i5 quad core processor at 2.7GHz, 1TB hard drive and Radeon HD 6770M graphics card and it costs $1,699. If you want a few other options added to it, it will cost considerably more.

These new iMac versions start shipping today. [Source: CrunchGear]
