The Huawei Ascend II is going to be available this week at US Cellular, according to an announcement from the company. US Cellular announced that this phone will be available online this week and from January it will also show up in stores. As long as you’re getting a new contract for 2 years, the phone is going to be free.

This Android phone doesn’t have the best specs, but the price is a low one, so many things can be forgiven thanks to that. Huawei Ascend II comes with a 3.4 inch touch screen with a resolution of 320×480, a camera of 5MP, a processor which runs at 600MHz, support for microSD cards (the phone has a 2GB card installed) and the battery is a 1400 mAh model. Other features include GPS, WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth. It appears that they’re already preparing a new version though, as the database of Verizon Wireless updated with a model called Droid Razr Maxx in it. No news right now on what this phone actually is, but hopefully the Maxx name means that it will be considerably improved in the hardware department.

The source code for Android 4.0 was released by Google just last week, and already developers are working hard on porting it to a number of smartphones which were launched recently. Two of these handsets already have an unofficial version of Android 4.0. These two are the LG Optimus 3D and the Samsung Galaxy S II.

Right now, these phones use just the basic functions of Android, with things like WiFi or Bluetooth missing at this point. Chances are that they will show up soon enough though.

Tech analysts, experts, gurus, and geeks alike tend to look at the Apple iPhone as the benchmark for future smartphone design. When the iPhone originally introduced an exclusively touchscreen cell phone experience, the industry knew they were looking into the future. Now that the iPhone 4S has an ultra-advanced app that enables users to simply ask for a phone number lookup to get it, next year’s run-of-the-mill mobile phones are sure to include the same thing. But no matter how smart, thin, and sexy the latest iPhone and other mobile advancements of 2011 have been, none incorporate an attribute that’s certain to make a breakthrough in the year 2012: the ability to bend.

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense to invest in technology that allows pocket-size devices to become bendable. Humans are bendable, and therefore anything on our person that isn’t is at perpetual risk of being damaged when the body commits to basic natural contortions. Right now, we carry around fragile and frigid devices just asking to be smashed; when your thigh gets squashed against the side of the bus after another passenger heaves his way into the small seat next to you, you better hope your phone is in your other pocket. But with a bendable device, the impact would be spread out against your body when the device molds to the shape of your leg upon striking the side of the bus.

This isn’t just talk based on paper prototypes: Nokia and Samsung are both currently in the process of perfecting bendable prototypes that already exist. But these companies are taking a careful lesson likely mined from the long-lasting and highly successful practices of Apple Inc.: not only provide revolutionary form, give it a reason to exist as well. The twisting and bending of these new phones won’t just be for show and to safeguard against destruction. As far as we can tell from the prototypes that have been released, bending such a phone when it’s unlocked will result in a particular function being performed; if you want to scroll, you’ll curl one end upward as though you were squeezing the most out of a tube of toothpaste.

As far as 2012 is concerned, little will likely be achieved in this subset of mobile device short of further trade show revelations and an end-of-year release to see how well next year’s holiday market warms up to the idea of a bendable smartphone. But whether it’s next year or the year afterward, bendable smartphones are going to become a hot item for mobile-minded consumers. It’s a revolutionary attribute we surprisingly did not see Apple incorporate first. In fact, this might be the first time in which Apple will blatantly copy the breakthrough of another company when it comes to smartphone technology.

Competing with the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy S2 cell phone and HTC’s Sensation 4G cell phone is no easy feat, and the Sony Xperia Play doesn’t even come close. Sony was late to enter in to the smartphone market, and it’s attempt to finally do so fell a little short due to the previous releases of Apple and Android phones. It’s recent release, the Xperia Play is also bound to fail in U.S. markets, as the phone doesn’t even seem as advanced as a second grade Android phone.

When people heard about the release of a new Sony gaming smartphone, they immediately correlated the up-coming device with the PlayStation’s. For years, the PlayStation has been offering excellent graphics and complete gaming experience. A smartphone released by Sony would be the perfect smartphones for gamers, right? Nope.

In fact, the HTC Sensation does a much better job.

While the Sony Play does allow users access to PlayStation Certified games, there really isn’t a gaming experience that even complements the PlayStation experience. The keypad is nice; designed to mimic a controller, it does provide gamers with at least the feel of the gaming experience. But that’s about it.

On the actual phone side of things, it is a little large. Because it was designed with gaming in mind, it has a larger screen and overall size because of the built in controller. At 4.7 x 2.4 x .6 inches and 6.2 oz, it’s a bit of a heavyweight. Other gaming oriented phones are actually smaller, but don’t have the keypad feature.

The screen is a nice 4 inches, which is becoming the industry standard, but the display itself is a little weak. It’s not as bright as other smartphones, and only has a 854 x 480 resolution. While the screen was probably reduced to save battery life while gaming, it doesn’t make doing so less enjoyable. Gaming is all about graphics, and it the Xperia drops the ball with them. However, the battery life is impeccable, and the phone can go for an astonishing 9 hours – which is unheard of for a smartphone of this size.

The sound on the Xperia is also good, and there is a camera on the phone as well. So the Xperia doesn’t have to be about gaming all the time, and it is available at both Verizon and AT&T which is good for those wanting high speeds.

Overall, the Sony Xperia Play is mediocre at best. For a company that is renowned for gaming, any gaming smartphone released by them should have been incredible. Unfortunately, the Xperia play simply isn’t.

During the third quarter of 2011, the number of smartphone sales from Samsung surpassed those of Apple by over 10 million units.

Not too long ago, Android smartphones finally outsold the iPhones and now there is also a company which sells better than Apple. For the first time, Samsung managed to sell more smartphones than Apple did and it happened during the last quarter. BBC says that over 27.8 million smartphones were sold by Samsung during the last quarter, while Apple managed 10 million less. Obviously, a lot of people were waiting for the next version of iPhone to appear before they spent any money, so the numbers aren’t entirely accurate, but with that kind of difference, Samsung would’ve won anyway this contest.
