3d-holographic-display

Great news for the Star Wars fans out there. Researchers from USC have taken us a step further in the quest for a 3D Holographic Display. They are now able to present interactive 3D graphics to multiple viewers, from all angles.

It consists of a high-speed video projector, a spinning mirror and FPGA circuitry to decode specially rendered DVI video signals.

The display uses a standard programmable graphics card to render over 5,000 images per second of interactive 3D graphics, projecting 360-degree views with 1.25 degree separation up to 20 updates per second. We describe the system’s projection geometry and its calibration process, and we present a multiple-center-of-projection rendering technique for creating perspective-correct images from arbitrary viewpoints around the display. Our projection technique allows correct vertical perspective and parallax to be rendered for any height and distance when these parameters are known, and we demonstrate this effect with interactive raster graphics using a tracking system to measure the viewer’s height and distance. We further apply our projection technique to the display of photographed light fields with accurate horizontal and vertical parallax.

And the video to top it off.

Apparently, South Korea, home of many embracing new technology, plans to build a Robot City, a place dedicated only to the construction, research and development of robots. It will cost them $530 million and it will start in 2009. For some reason I’m betting it will become a major tourist attraction for geeks from around the world. The local robot market was around $800 million in 2006.

This might be the coolest thing I’ve seen this year, and I don’t even own or use Photoshop. I think I will when this comes out. Take a look in the video below at the cool technology invented by Shai Avidan, which joined Adobe just few days after the video was posted on YouTube.

While many are playing the much anticipated and praised game Bioshock, the guys at Valve got a ban on playing the game. Apparently they will be able to play again when they finish and launch Half-Life: Episode Two and The Orange Box.
Once Orange Box is released however, everyone will get a free copy, as a reward. I hope they’re getting more then that as a reward because that game is not that expensive.

Here’s a video of the PC demo for Bioshock if you don’t know what it’s about.

Pretty incredible artwork by Paul Smith, all done with a typewriter. You wouldn’t believe it looking at them but they’re done with these character only: @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ .  The rest of his art on his site at the gallery area.

Paul Smith, the man with extraordinary talent was born in Philadelphia on September 21, 1921 with severe cerebral palsy.

Not only had Paul beaten the odds of a life with spastic cerebral palsy, a disability that impeded his speech & mobility but also taught himself to become a master artist as well as a terrific chess player even after being devoid of a formal education as a child.

“When typing, Paul used his left hand to steady his right one. Since he couldn’t press two keys at the same time, he almost always locked the shift key down and made his pictures using the symbols at the top of the number keys. In other words, his pictures were based on these characters … @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ .

fotologHi Media, a Paris based media company, acquired Fotolog, a photo sharing site based in New York. The reported price for the transaction is $90 million, in cash plus stock. Fotolog is apparently very popular in Europe and Latin America, with limited success in the US. For 2007, Fotolog, a company founded in 2002, predicts a $2.3 million revenue.

Out of the $90 million price, 77% will be Hi Media stock and 23% in cash. Hi Media will probably use its experience in micro payments and online ads (their main areas of expertise) to monetize better Fotolog.

  • Gaming (consoles and video games)
  • Hardware (computer hardware)
  • Software (any new and interesting software)
  • Internet News (Google, Yahoo, Facebook and everything else)
  • Mobile (mobile phones, laptops and everything in between)
  • Technology (technological advances)

  • Lemming Fun (because some fun never hurt anyone)
  • Reviews (title says it all)
  • Others (whatever doesn’t fit in the other categories)
  • TechLemming (anything related to this blog, like this post)

As you can see, mostly content that appeal to other geeks such as me. Hope you’ll find it useful.
