At Computex 2008, Clarion announced the „Mobile Internet Navigation Device”, now with a fresh case design and various color options. This MiND UMPC features a 5.2-inch WVGA 800 x 480 touchscreen and, back in January at least, Intel’s Menlow platform. Its menu includes Internet and messaging, GPS and Office access, shortcuts to YouTube and MySpace, and multimedia, WiFi and Bluetooth. Even if the installed Linux version is user-friendly, Clarion still included a stylus.

MiND UMPC has a price tag of $700 and will hit the US market later this year and the European one in 2009. Clarion also announced a „Pro” version with 3G WWAN but there is no information about how much this one will cost.

It seems like Western Digital decided to take a step forward and announcing a platter-based alternative to high-speed solid-state storage. Rumor is that they are developing a new device that will work on astonishing 20,000rpm.

This new WD drive is a 2.5-inch model with a custom 3.5-inch ‘caddy’ similar to that of the VelociRaptor VR150 and apparently it will be very silent.

Even if platter-based drives are cheaper than SSDs, no one knows if WD will play all their cards on HDD or they will enter the new SSD world.

ASUS is preparing in silence a dual-touchscreen notebook prototype that looks a lot like the OLPC XO-2. This new device features two MultiTouch-capable LCD panels, with the lower display used for a QWERTY keyboard and touchpad.

Rumor is that ASUS is not planning a commercial version of this notebook. In addition they presented a MultiTouch touchscreen slate with a new GUI that ASUS claim is particularly intuitive. Whenever a DVD is loaded into the slot-load drive, the UI dynamically changes to offer clear access to DVD-related tasks.

Considering all this, we can only hope this turns into a real deal.

Even if these days video and audio gadgets around us are digital, there are people that would rather listen their favorite tunes in an analog way. That’s the main reason why JVC has released two new video recorders capable of handling VHS, DVD, and even HDD recording.

The DR-HX500 has a 500GB hard drive and costs $906 while the DR-HX250 has only half that capacity (250GB) and has a $715 tag. Despite this difference, both models feature a built-in analog/digital TV tuner, an HDMI socket, a VHS player, and a DVD burner/player and are capable of handling DTS and Dolby Digital formats.

Starting now, you can forget about lossless digital audio from your BD-playin’ HTPC via HDMI because ASUS released at Computex the HDMI 1.3a compliant audio / video enhancement combo card in the world. The Xonar HDAV1.3 is both Protected Audio Playback Systems (PAPS) and Advanced Access Content System (AACS) certified and can bitstream multi-channel HD audio from Blu-ray Discs through a single cable.

It works great with a special version of ArcSoft’s TotalMedia Theater in decoding BD titles and taking unlimited advantage of Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD Master Audio.

The package also includes a Xonar HDAV1.3 Deluxe which allows users to get 7.1-channels of audio the analog way.

There is not information about pricing for time being.
